Joining Rokuhan To Micro-Trains Sectional Track

Posted by on March 17, 2014 .

Since Rokuhan introduced their sectional Z scale track, many people want to know if they can use it with their Micro-Trains sectional track, the answer is yes… with some minor adjustments and an optional couple of swipes with a file.

Joining your Rokuhan sectional track to your Micro-Trains sectional track:

1) Remove the plastic track bed and metal rail joiners from your MTL track
2) Add a second plastic track bed and rail joiner to one end of your Rokuhan track
3) Join the track up
4) Shim the MTL track and file the rails if required

1) Remove the plastic track bed and metal rail joiners from your MTL track
Rokuhan’s plastic track bed joiners and metal rail joiners are the way to go when joining these two brands of track together so we need to remove the plastic track bed joiner and metal rail joiner from one end of our MTL track.

2) Add a second plastic track bed and rail joiner to one end of your Rokuhan track
You now need to add a second plastic and metal rail joiner to one end of your Rokuhan track. This will give you one piece of Rokuhan track with the two plastic and two metal joiners on one end of the track. You’ll be mating this Rokuhan end to the end of the MTL track where we just removed the plastic and metal joiners.

3) Join the track up
Yes, this part can be a little fiddly as the Rokuhan plastic track bed joiner may need a little gentle persuasion to fit cleanly in to the MTL track. If necessary, a little trimming will get the Rokuhan plastic joiner to fit the MTL track.

4) Shim the MTL track and file the rails if required
The Rokuhan track profile is slightly higher than the MTL track profile so you’ll need a small shim, or a series of shims, to insure the rail heights meet as well as making sure the MTL track is properly supported. My measurements here show a shim of .015” will do the trick; this is the gap height under the MTL track.

After you’ve completed these steps, you may still find a very slight height difference in your rails. A couple of gentle swipes with a metal file will make this transition seem to disappear and give you a perfect marriage of Rokuhan and Micro-Trains track.

Note:
The Rokuhan plastic track bed and metal rail joiners work a little differently than their MTL counterparts. The ends of the metal joiners are angled down slightly and are held in place by downward pressure from the rails. When you pull out the plastic track bed joiner from a piece of Rokuhan track, the metal rail joiner comes with it. They’re easy to lose, so keep this in mind.
